It may not cure all ills, but a smile can take you a long way. It really can lift the soul up from the doldrums of self-doubt, and decay. Besides what it can do for you, it can also greatly improve the moods of those you are with. A smile is free, but it can pay you back quite handsomely. Perhaps, even more than you can realize!
After such a heated/controversial election cycle in the US, I feel now’s as good a time as ever to remember to embrace the beauty of individuality. You’re a free agent, and nobody should hold dominion over your mind. Not an institution (secular or religious), not your family, not your friends, not your spouse/significant other, not a philosophy, not your co-workers, not a country, not your past, nothing! There’s not a thing in existence that should hold that much power over any individual.
There are plenty of people out there who’d love to do your thinking for you, and then make you believe that you’re doing the decision making, when it’s really them all along. We’re all influenced by someone or something to some extent, and there’s nothing wrong with that! But we mustn’t be slaves to any individual or way of thinking.
Having said all of this, that doesn’t mean anyone is absolved from criticism. No one’s above reproach, no one! Any words or opinions that are racist, homophobic, sexist, hateful, spiteful, ignorant, or downright cruel, absolutely deserve all the criticism and contention they attract. That’s not having an opinion, that’s just being a jerk. Such dreck has no place in this world, and certainly doesn’t deserve any protection or admiration.
This world is a harsh, cruel, and depressing place, yet one gift we’ve been given is that of individuality. It’s not always easy to stand up for what you believe in, or simply be “you” whatever that might be for each individual. Yet, it’s a truly beautiful thing when it’s embraced in a positive fashion. How different would this world be without those who were willing to stick their necks out for the greater good? Or who were simply being their authentic selves? Life’s too short to be someone else, so may we all embrace this gift in our own unique, and enriching ways!
*And yes, there is a poem related to this topic. Haha! 😀 First new one in awhile!! 🙂 I’ll post it in due time!
Love is a powerful thing, and an emotion that can spur the noblest of actions that a person can possibly pursue. It doesn’t just have to be romantic either. There’s the love of a parent who only wants the best for their child. The faithful friend who’s always there in one’s time of need. Or the love of one’s country that spurs someone to try to bring about change for the better. Love in all of its forms is an amazing thing.
This poem is about a romantic type of love, but not in the lovey dovey sense. It’s about loving a person who’s been down on their luck. They’ve been taken advantage of, stomped on by the world, and are devoid of all hope. Outwardly they might seem like a mess, but all it takes is one person to see the true beauty that lies within. And with that, a beautiful transformation can take place over time. One that can shock the world!
I definitely put some of myself in this poem. Though that’s true of any poem (haha) but this one probably more than most. This is the kind of love that I’d want to give someone. To be everything everyone else was not, and even more. That even if you felt like the lowliest of the low, I could make you feel like the highest of the high. And that no matter how bad anyone else in the past made you feel, that I could make you see just how amazing you really are. It’s a lofty ideal and I’m as far away from perfect as possible, but that’s what I’d strive for. I think that’s what I try to do for those people that matter the most to me. Whether friends or family, I just want people to know that they matter.
Considering how much I’ve rambled on, I’ll just post the poem in a separate entry. Thanks for reading my thoughts on this matter! 🙂
Sometimes an oasis in the desert can seem so alluring, but it’s only a mirage. Other times that oasis is even more you thought it could possibly be. Things are not always what they seem, which can be both good as well as bad. Keep an open mind, but be ready to rein it in as well.
A good deed without expecting anything in return cleanses the palate of the soul. It feels so good when you know you’re trying to do something positive for someone else with no ugly underlying motives soiling the act. Such an act is positively refreshing, and is almost revolutionary nowadays. It’s amazing to think about what this world would be like if we all were naturally inclined to seek the good of others all the time. No one would be in need of anything, and we’d all be happy in return. Such a world is a fantasy, but we can all take the initiative to bring more positivity to a world that can use all the light it can handle.
Life is not about what you didn’t know in the past, but what you do with the knowledge you’ve gained in the present, as well as in the future.
Just something I believe I was thinking about while I was walking yesterday. I did add the future part, but I think it fits well with the theme of the thought I was trying to express. I thought it was worthy of being shared! Hoping for a good week for everyone, and a great June too!!
